Compulsory traineeship for Engineering

All information on curricular and extra-curricular internships

In order to start the traineeship the student must have obtained at least 135 ETCS credits at the start date of the traineeship, and must have supported the traineeship preparation by 2 ETCS credits. The traineeship ranges from 400 to 420 hours, which is equivalent to:

  • 3 months if taken on full-time, i.e. for a maximum of 40 hours per week;
  • 4/5 months if taken on part-time, i.e. for a maximum of 20 hours per week.

The experience must be continuous: therefore, several internship periods cannot be cumulated.

The regulations of the traineeship are established by the national and regional regulations in force, and by the Universities. The Politecnico di Milano will prepare the documentation required by law, verify the quality of training projects, and provide insurance coverage.

At the end of the traineeship period, the student and the tutor of the host institution must complete online an experience evaluation questionnaire within 10 working days from the end of the traineeship. In addition, in order to obtain the ETCS credits for the traineeship, the student must also prepare a final technical report on the activity carried out.

The procedure for activating the traineeship is described on the dedicated page on the Career Service website. Further information on the training traineeship (both for students and for companies wishing to offer a traineeship) is available on the programme’s website at www.mecheng.polimi.it/bachelor-of-science/professional-track/internship/?lang=en

Useful contacts:

Students following the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to M. Sc.) in Mechanical Engineering ("Machine Tools Engineering" track) have the opportunity to complete optional traineeships in within companies.

Being optional, this type of traineeship does not give entitlement to training credits.

It is also possible to do an optional traineeship aimed at carrying out the degree thesis. In this instance, the student must first coordinate with the teacher supervising the thesis.
